Federal Agencies

Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) http://www.hhs.gov/

DHHS is the federal agency that oversees a number of other federal agencies involved in public health and human services.  Public Health Divisions include the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), Indian Health Service (IHS), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR).  Human Services Divisions include Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA), Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Administration on Aging (AoA).  Prior to March 31, 1995, the Social Security Administration was part of the Department of Health and Human Services. It is now an independent agency, but it continues to work closely with DHHS's programs. 


The National Institutes of Health (NIH)  http://www.nih.gov/

The NIH are the premier medical research and medical research funding agencies.  The Institutes, Centers and Divisions that make up the NIH include National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institute of Dental Research (NIDR),  National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDKD), National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHHD), National Eye Institute (NEI), National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMSD), National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDOCD), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), Fogarty International Center, and National Library of Medicine (NLM). 

The NIH website provides health information,and research news and funding opportunities, as well as links to the individual Institutes, and a search engine. The NIH Health Information webpage http://www.nih.gov/health/ has information about publications, hotlines, special programs, clinical trials, health reference databases, and other information.  The NIH Information Index provides a way to find information on diseases currently under investigation by NIH or NIH-supported scientists, major NIH research areas, and other important health-related topics. 

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC ) http://www.cdc.gov/

The CDC website provides information on a variety of health topics, infectious and chronic diseases, travelers’ health, health data and statistics, and current news items related to disease and public health.
