Health Information

healthfinder®

healthfinder® http://www.healthfinder.gov is a free gateway to reliable consumer health and human services information developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  healthfinder® can lead you to selected online publications, clearinghouses, databases, web sites, and support and self-help groups, as well as the government agencies and not-for-profit organizations that produce reliable information for the public.  Most of the linkages are national in scope and orientation.  We provide a direct  link to healthfinder® search engine on the FHIC homepage.

WebMD(SM)

WebMD(SM) http://www.webmd.com is an online health resource that provides information for both consumers and health care providers.  Links to news articles on a variety of health topics are provided, as well as a medical encyclopedia, and drug references.  Interactive areas include online chat rooms, message boards, and an “Ask our experts” site.

USF Virtual Library

USF Virtual Library http://www.lib.usf.edu/virtual provides a number of searchable databases for health and medical articles, books and other materials, including materials available at various USF branch libraries, as well as other libraries in the State of Florida University System (SUS).  Some of the databases are available for public access, but most are only searchable by USF faculty, staff, and students.  If access is restricted, there is a notation in the list of databases pages noting “USF only.”  Medical databases such as Medline, via links to the National Library of Medicine’s http://www.nlm.nih.gov Internet Grateful Med or Pub Med, as well as the SUS library catalogues via Web LUIS http://webluis.fcla.edu/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/fclwlui/webluis are available for public access.

The “Virtual” Public Health Center

The “Virtual” Public Health Center http://www-sci.lib.uci.edu/HSG/Phealth.html is a “Medical Multimedia Education and Specialized Information Resource Center” which focuses on environment, disaster and safety. 

Virtual Hospital ® the Apprentice's Assistant (TM)

The Virtual Hospital ® the Apprentice's Assistant (TM), a service of University of Iowa Health Care, is a digital health sciences library created in 1992 at the University of Iowa to help meet the information needs of health care providers and patients. The goal of the Virtual Hospital digital library is to make the Internet a useful medical reference and health promotion tool for health care providers and patients. The Virtual Hospital digital library contains hundreds of books and brochures for health care providers and patients. The Virtual Hospital digital library also delivers Continuing Education (CE) to health care provider's offices and homes in a clinically relevant context at their convenience. http://www.vh.org/

Hospital Libraries on the Web http://www.hls.mlanet.org/WebResources/Hosp_Libraries.html is a service of the Hospital Libraries Section of the Medical Libraries Association which provides links to the library page of each institution, indexed by state.  The two active links listed for Florida include the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute Medical Library in Tampa http://www.moffitt.usf.edu/hlmlib/, and the Watson Clinic Library in Lakeland http://www.watsonclinic.com/html.doc/library.htm.

New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM)

Condensed medical articles from the NEJM.   http://www.nejm.org/content/index.asp

Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR)

Current and archived articles about diseases and outbreaks. The MMWR Series is prepared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  The data in the weekly MMWR are provisional, based on weekly reports to CDC by state health departments. http://www2.cdc.gov/mmwr/

Medical Journal of Australia (MJA)

An electronic medical journal with full text articles on medical subjects and a searchable index and archived material back to 1996.  http://www.mja.com.au/

Electronic British Medical Journal (BMJ)

This electronic version of the BMJ contains full text articles and editorials, as well as photographs and tables.  It is also searchable by topic within the journal archives from January 1995 through the present issue.  http://www.bmj.com/
